New president and new tradition welcome 625 incoming students on opening day

"Have no small thoughts here, have no small dreams," DePauw's new president, Brian W. Casey, told the 625 new students who arrived at the University on Saturday, Aug. 23. At the opening convocation in a packed Kresge Auditorium, President Casey welcomed "the 172nd group of students to assemble on the grounds of this grand and marvelous University."

President Casey, who took the reins of DePauw on July 1 after serving as an administrator at Harvard University, launched a new DePauw tradition on this opening day. He led a procession of incoming students underneath the ornamental gateway made of brick and iron, which is located on Locust Street at the western end of Anderson Street. The group walked past East College, the oldest building on campus toward the academic quad, and then made its way to the Green Center for the Performing Arts, where the new students marched through a receiving line comprised of cheering DePauw faculty members. To read more about this story and access video and audio clips of the opening convocation, click here.

Support student scholarships and faculty members through the Annual Fund

“I felt people at DePauw treated me as though they really believed I could significantly contribute, both academically and through extracurricular activities,” says Ka’Lena Cuevas ’10 of Pearl City, Hawaii. “Although I applied and was accepted to nine other equally prestigious universities around the country, I felt DePauw provided the most opportunities for scholarships and financial aid.”

For current DePauw students and faculty members, intellectual life is strengthened by the interaction they have with one another on campus and off, in or out of the classroom. The support of DePauw alumni and friends provides these opportunities through gifts to the DePauw Annual Fund.
