How to See and Hear DePauw

The Audio and Video Icons

Any time you see the video icon or the audio icon in DePauw web pages, you can click the icon to see or hear the selection. The icon is generally accompanied by the clip title and size. See the example below.

In the example, the Video clip title is "It's Unbelievable," and the size is 350 kilobytes. The audio clip  title is "Students Say Thanks," and the size is 275 kilobytes. A good rule of thumb for downloading audio and video on a 56K modem is that 100KB will take about 30-60 seconds to download. If the clip is measured in MB (megabytes) then it will take a long time to download on a modem.

Seeing and Hearing

When you click an audio or video link, QuickTime should open. It may open as a plug-in in your browser, or the actual program may appear on your screen.

The QuickTime Plug-in window should appear in your browser and look like the screen capture to the left. If you do not have QuickTime currently installed on your computer, you can download the program from <Apple.com>.

We us the mp3 format for audio. Your computer should automatically open mp3 files. If you have a new PC running Windows, the Windows Media Player should automatically play mp3 files. If you do not have a program installed to play mp3 files, then you can download QuickTime from <Apple.com>, and it will play the audio.

Why QuickTime and MP3?

We use the QuickTime and mp3 formats on the DePauw web site because of the file sizes. We want you to be able to see DePauw without waiting during long download times. Watching digital video from 56K modem will still involve some wait time, but we have tried to minimize your wait as much as possible.
