DePauw Computer Accounts
Your DePauw computer accounts are a crucial component in your college experience. If you are like most students, you will find yourself checking your e-mail several times a day. The computer labs around campus used to be flooded in the 10 or 15 minutes between classes, particularly on Thursday and Friday when everyone was busy making plans for the weekend. Now that students have their own laptop and use wireless connections to the network, the use of the network is less obvious, though no less intense.
But your computer accounts are important for more things than your social life. Most faculty members use e-mail to communicate with students outside class and many use the Web or Blackboard for course information, assignments and discussion. Your registration for courses, grade information and Winter Term proposals are all handled electronically through your accounts. Communication with you through your DePauw computing accounts is considered official. Please see Privileges and Responsibilities below for important information about using your accounts appropriately.
Types of Accounts
Tigermail
Tigermail is a Web based mail utility using the Groupwise system from Novell. Using a Web browser, you can access it at: http://tigermail.depauw.edu. Your username and password were included in your housing information. If you have misplaced your account information or cannot get the login to work, contact the Helpdesk. You can access your email account from any computer that has Internet access, on campus or off. We strongly urge you to begin using your DePauw e-mail account, rather than trying to continue with an AOL or Hotmail account you have been using. Many faculty members and University offices send important information to your DePauw e-mail account, which may not get forwarded to other accounts.
You may want change your e-mail password to something you can easily remember, but not something so obvious that others can figure out how to use your account. To change your e-mail password, login to Tigermail. Select the options icon at the top center of the page (it looks like a checklist) and from the options window select the password tab.
e-Services
Your e-Services account is used for transacting University business. This is what you will be using for making course requests, viewing your grades, making transcript requests, and viewing your bills. Your e-Services username and password have been set the same as your Tigermail username and password. If you change your Tigermail password, that does not change your e-Services password, so be sure to keep hold of the original password we sent you in your housing information. Some of the logins and forms on the Class of 2010 site use your Tigermail account; others use your e-Services account. If one password doesn't work, try the other. Then call the Helpdesk if it still doesn't work.
Campus Network
The campus network (LAN) is a Novell network and you will hear your campus network account referred to as your Novell account. Through the network, you gain access to various storage areas. Your individual area is referred to as your P-drive. Some classes have a class area referred to as the I-drive. During orientation, you will receive additional information about your network account, including information about how to use your laptop to connect wirelessly.
Blackboard
Many professors use a course management package called Blackboard to post the course syllabus and assignments, to handle submission of work, to post grades and to conduct online discussions. You will receive additional information about using Blackboard during orientation and in the classes that use it.
Privileges and Responsibilities
The use of any of the above accounts implies an agreement to follow the University policies regarding use of equipment, resources and facilities, including the following:
- You are entitled to access only to your own accounts, and you should not grant access to your accounts to others. This is important as you are responsible for any activity generated from your account.
- You are entitled access only to your own files and public files.
- You may not jeopardize the security or integrity of the system.
- You may not use electronic mail to send chain letters or obscene, abusive or harassing messages.
- The content of all personal Web pages should follow applicable state and federal laws and University policies. These policies cover, for example, plagiarism, copyright infringement, conduct and harassment.
- DePauw's computer system and network may not be used for commercial activities. This includes, but is not limited to, running any sort of private business through the University Web site.
- You may not impersonate other individuals in electronic communications.
- The network is a shared resource. Use of the network that inhibits or interferes with the use of the network by others is not permitted.
- You may not use an IP address, computer name or port that is not assigned to you.
You should report any abuse of the above policy, any instance of harassment, or any illegal activity to the Office of Public Safety, Student Affairs, or the Information Services Helpdesk.
