Leaves are arranged in a large dense tuft, up to 2 feet tall, 3 feet across. Leaf blades are long and narrow.

Flowers are produced in spikelets. Flowers are wind-pollinated.

The genus name, Sporobolus, is from the Greek for "seed-ejector."  The prefix spora is from the Greek for "seed" and the suffix bolus is from the Greek for "to cast forth" referring to the plant's habit of dropping seeds at maturity.  The species name, heterolepis, is from the Greek hetero for "varied" and lepis for "scale."
