Professor Ray Burgman joined the DePauw University faculty in 2001 as a pre-doctoral faculty fellow through a program called the Consortium for Faculty Diversity (CFD) at Liberal Arts Colleges. CFD strives to increase minority presence in liberal arts institutions by diversifying the applicant pool. In addition, the program enables young scholars at the pre-doctoral stage to complete their final dissertation work while at the same time acquiring valuable experience on small liberal arts campuses. Professor Burgman attended New College of Florida as an undergraduate and received a bachelor's degree in Economics. While at New College, she took the opportunity to participate in a unique program, developed to increase minority PhDs in the economics profession and sponsored by the American Economics Association (AEA). Institutions such as University of Texas at Austin, Stanford, University of Colorado, and Duke University have hosted the AEA Summer Program. Professor Burgman later attended the University of Florida for her master's and doctoral degrees.Professor Burgman has a strong belief that one's research can inform one's teaching. Her primary research involves tax preparation. She is also interested in the alternative minimum tax and behavioral economics. At DePauw, she has taught Introduction to Economics, Intermediate Microeconomics, the Economics of Income Differences, and the Economics of War. In addition, she has participated in DePauw's First-Year Seminar program with a class entitled, the History, Economics, and Evolution of Jazz Music. During spring 2007, she plans to develop a course dealing with tax policy and ethics, using course release-time granted through a Fisher Time-Out. An interesting counter from the viewpoint of a tax economist is the cost of the Iraq War. http://costofwar.com
Equally interesting is a pictorial graph showing the US budget and what your tax dollars are buying.

Previously, she served on the board of directors for the League of Women Voters while living in St. Petersburg, FL. In addition, she was a big sister in the Big Brothers, Big Sisters organization in Gainesville, FL and, later in, St. Petersburg, FL. At DePauw, she served as the advisor for the Association of African American Students (AAAS) from 2004 - 2006. Currently, while still serving primarily as a teacher-scholar, she is also a Part-time Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs and the Program Coordinator for the CFD.If you need to contact her, please e-mail her at the address above.
