Requirements for Major and Minor in Film Studies

Requirements:

Film Studies is an interdisciplinary major and minor which incorporates offerings from several academic departments.

The Film Studies Major consists of nine courses:

  • THREE REQUIRED CORE COURSES:
    1. Introduction to Film
    2. Film and Culture
    3. Senior Capstone course
  • THREE ADDITIONAL COURSES, ONE IN EACH OF THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES:
    1. Film History, Film Theory, or Film Criticism
    2. Produciton or Screenwriting
    3. National Cinema or Genre
  • THREE ELECTIVES
  • OF THE NINE COURSES TAKEN FOR THE MAJOR:
    1. At least four course must be at the 300-400 level (senior capstone counts as one of these courses).

To fulfill a Film Studies Minor, students must complete 5 courses, including:
· Either ENG 167: Introduction to Film or COMM 237: Film and Culture

· A film production or screenwriting class
· A course in film history or film criticism
· A course in cultural film or genre studies
· A fifth film course of your choosing

Also:

· At least one course must be at the 300-400 level.
· At least three courses in the minor must be outside the student's major area.
· A 2.0 grade point average must be achieved in the minor, and no courses in the minor subject may be taken on a Pass/Fail basis.
· Double minors must have at least four courses that do not overlap.
