Athletic Training Education Program - CAATE Accredited
Curriculum
The certified athletic trainer (ATC) is a highly educated and skilled professional specializing in prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries. In cooperation with physicians and other allied health personnel, the ATC functions as an integral member of the healthcare team in secondary schools, colleges and universities, sports medicine clinics, sports medicine clinics, professional sports programs, industrial settings and other healthcare environments.
The DePauw University ATEP is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). The road to your success and effectiveness in this program starts with our program philosophy. What you achieve in your clinical experiences will be determined by whether or not you are an "actively engaged" student who pursues the learning opportunities and the educational resources in the clinical program.
We hope that you will take a special pride in our program and as a member of the DePauw University Sports Medicine team, strive to display professionalism in all situations. In the end, our greatest program goal is for our graduates to be not only professionals in our field but also leaders in our profession.
Mission Statement
The mission of the DePauw University Athletic Training Education Program is to provide exceptional professional preparation for students interested in a career as a Certified Athletic Trainer and for those interested in advanced health science graduate programs that will enhance and complement athletic training certificaiton. The program provides a diverse curriculum that includes both didactic and clinical experiences as set forth by CAATE in the "Standards for the Accreditation of Entry-level Athletic Training Education Programs".Program Philosophy
In order to be successful, students must be committed to excellence in all phases of their program, including scholarship, clinical practice, and personal development. In healthcare, no patient (or athlete) wants or deserves mediocre care. Therefore as healthcare providers we must strive to provide the best care available. In order to accomplish this goal, students must demonstrate exceptional commitment to both knowledge and skill development. This can only happen when students are both prepared to learn and actively seek to apply their knowledge in clinical situations. Students are strongly encouraged to ask questions of the faculty and instructors.Program Goals
DePauw's program is a five-semester program with a selective admission process. Specific program goals are to:
- Develop the athletic training student into a well-rounded individual with liberal learning that will further their ability to fully compete and effectively function in today's world.
- Foster learning and intellectual growth through the provision of a challenging athletic training curriculum.
- To prepare students to pass the BOC Certification Exam and be able to attain Indiana State Licensing.
- Provide diverse and structured clinical learning experiences allowing students to prepare for graduate programs in health science fields and/or a career in athletic training.
- Build student collegiality within the program through their participation in activities such as the Medical Perspective's speaker series and through membership in professional organizations such as the NATA, IATA and the ACSM.
- Provide opportunities for students to participate in community events and professional activities that will instill a sense of active participation in their communities and chosen profession after graduation.
- Offer students effective advising and counseling that assists them in academic and career planning.
