PROFESSOR TIMOTHY STILES

Dr. Timothy Stiles has been teaching at DePauw since fall of 2008. He earned his B.A. degree in Physics from Grinnell College in 1998. After a year of working as a technical support engineer for Wolfram Research, Inc. (the makers of Mathematica) he went back to school for graduate work in medical physics. Dr. Stiles completed his Ph.D. in Medical Physics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2005. His dissertation focused on the safety of medical ultrasound and he created new methods of accurately measuring the pressure and intensity created by diagnostic ultrasound scanners. From 2005 to 2008, he was an Assistant Scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, working on methods of determining the accuracy of computer simulations to mimic ultrasound scanners.

Since joining the faculty at DePauw, Dr. Stiles has taught both introductory and advanced physics classes as well as a first year seminar on medical imaging. He has continued to perform research in medical ultrasound, most recently mentoring two DePauw physics majors during the summer of 2009 on methods of using ultrasound to quantitatively determine the acoustic backscatter coefficient. When not busy with teaching or research, Dr. Stiles likes to spend time hiking or biking or playing with his children and dog. He is an active member of a local choir and the Putnam County Playhouse, a local community theater group.
