Russian Studies is an interdisciplinary concentration combining courses in Russian language, literature, culture, history, politics, and geography. Students majoring or minoring in Russian Studies select courses dealing with early to modern Russian history, Soviet and contemporary Russian society and politics, including the post-communist successor states of the former Soviet Union and the countries of East Central Europe, as well as studies of Russian literature, culture, and folklore. The Russian Studies student will develop a level of language proficiency in on-campus courses as the core of the concentration. In addition, off-campus programs in Russia and other Slavic countries, either for a summer or a full semester, provide on-site studies in literature, history, and the social sciences, while immersing the student in the study and daily use of the language.
As Russia and East Central Europe have opened up following the passing of their communist phase, the former Soviet sphere offers a wide variety of both study and career options -- in business, media, law and government service. Since the 1970's DePauw has sponsored on a regular basis a January Winter Term tour of Russia, East Central Europe, and Central Asia. Now DePauw students can do business-related internships in Russian cities as a part of their semester abroad. DePauw's International Business Program also allows for a concentration in Russian Studies with its international business emphasis.
