Vita
Angela Castañeda is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Latin American and Caribbean Studies at DePauw University. Dr. Castañeda obtained her doctorate in cultural anthropology from Indiana University. Her research interests focus on issues of identity, festival, religion, and expressive culture among communities of the African Diaspora in Latin America and the Caribbean. Her courses examine how people view themselves and how our identities are continually crafted into new understandings of who we are, and she has presented her research at professional conferences such as the American Anthropological Association, Central States Anthropological Society, and the Latin American Studies Association annual meetings. Dr. Castañeda’s most recent publication is “The African Diaspora in Mexico: Santería, Tourism and Representations of the State” in The African Diaspora and the Study of Religion, edited by Theodore Trost with Palgrave Macmillan Press (2007). She has a forthcoming publication, “Musical Migrations: Son Cubano a la Veracruzana” in SECOLAS Annals, with Blackwell Publishing, (2008). Dr. Castañeda is committed to continue her research on the African Diaspora in the Americas, with future areas of research on the commercialization of Afro-Brazilian religious traditions.
Outside of academia, Angela enjoys practicing yoga, sampling Bloomington’s deliciously diverse food, and leisurely walks with her husband, son Max and much too human-like dog Frida.
