Kelley Hall grew up in Michigan.  She received her B.A., with majors in Sociology and Spanish, from Alma College in 1991.  Adding a major in sociology was a decision she made while finishing a Spanish major in Madrid, Spain.  She didn’t know what she would do with a Spanish major.  An M.A. (University of Memphis,1993) and Ph.D. (University of Akron, 1998) in sociology later, she knows the sociology major was a good choice.  Kelley came to DePauw in the fall of 1999.  She is currently an Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs with primary  responsibilities for academic advising and assessment.  In time, the Spanish proved to be useful.  Since arriving at DePauw, Kelley has gone on three Winter Term trips to Spanish-speaking countries: Mexico, Paraguay, and Costa Rica.

In sociology, Kelley teaches courses on Gender, Social Inequalities, Introductory Sociology, and Research Methods.  She also teaches Introduction to Women’s Studies and a first-year seminar called “Comic Books and American Society.”  An examination of the intersections of gender, race, class, and sexuality is central to every class.  Kelley has published articles on teaching and presented several papers on the division of child transportation work in dual-earner married families.  Her scholarly interest in comics focuses on comics as a teaching tool and the X-Men as a metaphor for social inequality.

Outside of class, Kelley is an avid HBO fan and not surprisingly, a comic book collector.
