Kelley Hall grew up in Michigan.  She received her B.A., with majors in Sociology and Spanish, from Alma College in 1991.  Adding a major in sociology was a decision she made while finishing a Spanish major in Madrid, Spain.  She didn’t know what she would do with a Spanish major.  An M.A. (University of Memphis,1993) and Ph.D. (University of Akron, 1998) in sociology later, she knows the sociology major was a good choice.  Kelley came to DePauw in the fall of 1999.  She is currently an Associate Dean of Academic Affairs with primary  responsibilities for academic advising and assessment.  In time, the Spanish proved to be useful.  Since arriving at DePauw, Kelley has gone on three Winter Term trips to Spanish-speaking countries: Mexico, Paraguay, and Costa Rica.

In sociology, Kelley teaches courses on Gender, Social Inequalities, and Research Methods.  She also teaches Introduction to Women’s Studies and a first-year seminar called “Comic Books and American Society.”  An examination of the intersections of gender, race, class, and sexuality are central to every class. Kelley's scholarly interest in comics focuses on comics as a teaching tool, including the work of Alison Bechtel to teach sexual identity development, Roberta Gregory to demonstrate feminist theory and lesbian community, Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis to teach cross-cultural experiences of girlhood, and the X-Men as a metaphor for social inequality.

Outside of class, Kelley is an avid HBO fan and not surprisingly, a comic book collector.
