Each May the Sociology & Anthropology Department honors our outstanding students by giving an award to those that qualify. Students may also qualify to become members of a national honor society. Recipients are listed below.
Paul C. Glick Award: This prize was established by Paul C. Glick, Class of 1933, professor emeritus at Arizona State, past president of the Population Association of America and for many years Senior Demographer of the U.S. Bureau of Census. It is given annually to a senior (Sociology, Anthropology or combined major) who has demonstrated academic excellence (3.5 GPA or higher) and also one who has contributed to the department and the university more generally. Several times we have given it to two students who qualified. They receive a monetary award and their name on an engraved plaque which hangs in the department office. Rolan Naylor Archaeology Award: for one or more students interested in conducting field work in Anthropological Archaeology. Congrats to our Anthropology students!
Four of the majors in anthropology will attend the annual American Anthropological Association meeting in Washington, DC - Amanda Fenn, Jamie Resseguie, Lindi Conover and Jeanette Jones submitted a proposal and were granted special funding to travel to/attend the annual disciplinary meeting November 28-December 2. Congrats to them on their hard work and motivation!
An additional note - Amanda Fenn recently wrote a column for the Anthropology Newsletter that was published this month (Vol. 48, No. 8, November issue). This column is one piece of her long term work on cultural constructions of virginity, sexuality and sex education in the contemporary United States.
Mary Jo Adams & Carli Worthman
Mary Jo Adams and Carli Worthman have each received a scholarship of $2500 from the Margaret Gilmore Fund administered by DePauw University to support the completion of a graduate degree program in library science. Both women have successfully been admitted into the Library and Information Science program at Indiana University.
Laura Hamilton, DPU '02, who is currently working on her doctorate in sociology at IU Bloomington is co-author (with Simon Cheng and Brian Powell) of "Adoptive Parents, Adaptive Parents: Evaluating the Importance of Biological Ties for Parental Investment," American Sociological Review (2007) 72(1) (February). ASR is a flagship journal published by the American Sociological Association.
The Department of Sociology & Anthropology announces the annual award(s) for one or more students interested in conducting field work in Anthropological Archaeology. Preference will be given to Anthropology and combined Sociology & Anthropology majors (including graduating seniors) who have taken a course in Archaeology. The award, established by Roland Naylor, is intended to support field work over a summer or Winter Term. Each recipient must present the results of the sponsored research project in a public forum upon return to campus (e.g., presentation to a class or department event).
Each application should include a description of the program, project and/or site at which the field work will be conducted (including the cost), an unofficial transcript, and a personal statement (not to exceed 2 pages) indicating:
a) any past experience relevant to the work on the proposed project;
b) the applicant’s current interest in the project; and
c) how the award will contribute to the applicant’s goals for the future.
