How to Apply

Students from various backgrounds and interests apply to be student leaders.  Many have participated in a previous Alternative Break Programs, but this is not a requirement.  Even so, students that have experience in service and previous leadership experience are encouraged to apply.  The application process is outlined below:

Please read carefully, incomplete applications will not be considered.

  1. Preparation: Review the below student leadership roles and responsibilities to better understand what you are applying for.
  2. Online Application: Complete your online application form here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/altbreakleader.  You are not able to save and return to the application, so be sure you have 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete the application in its entirety. 
  3. Cover Letter and Resume: You are required to submit a cover letter and resume to complete your application.  Please submit your cover letter and resume as an email attachment sent to opportunities@depauw.edu.  In the subject line, please write: Alt Break Student Leader application
    In your cover letter, please describe why you are interested in a student leadership position and indicate if there is a particular service trip (or location) you are interested in leading.
  4. Please be sure to submit your application materials on or by April 15th.  Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Role and Responsibilities

As the Alternative Break Student Leader, you will have the opportunity to plan and lead two service-based programs, one for fall and one for spring break.  With the guidance and support of Alternative Break staff, you will:

  • Identify service partners to work with, including location
  • Recruit faculty/staff leaders to work with you
  • Promote the programs amongst your peers and participate in the selection of participants
  • Plan and facilitate pre-departure and reunion meetings
  • Guide the team in reflection before, during and after the service trip
  • Among other duties and responsibilities
