Meet the 2013 Student Leaders!

Servicio believes student leaders make the difference! They know what the participants are experiencing and are eager to give back to the program... Read on to learn about the leaders for 2013!

Sharon Maes

¡Hola todos! I’m Sharon! I’m 21 years old and from St. Louis, Missouri. I am currently a sophomore at DePauw with majors in Spanish and Conflict Studies. This coming summer will be my third consecutive experience with the Servicio program, and I am beyond excited. I had an amazing time as a participant two summers ago in Peru, was thrilled to go back last summer as a student leader in Ecuador, and cannot wait to begin working with Jake and Sarah to take the program to Spain! Servicio has honestly been my favorite thing about DePauw. The program is a perfect manifestation of Spanish, solidarity, reflection, and community, and has been the most challenging as well as the most rewarding part of my time here. It’s allowed me the opportunity to learn a little more about the world I live in by studying a foreign language and meeting a different culture, teaching me to recognize my own language and my own culture. My experiences with the Servicio program have been invaluable and have left me wanting more. I just returned from Winter Term in Cuba, and I’m currently finalizing my plans for spending both semesters abroad next year. I look forward to meeting this summer’s program participants, and I cannot wait for our journey in Spain!

Jake Rust

Hello! My name is Jake Rust. I am 20 years old and currently a sophomore. I am an Economics major, with Philosophy and Spanish minors. I am very active in the DePauw Community. I am a Management Fellow, an ITAP student, and President of my Fraternity, Phi Delta Theta. I am also active in various clubs such as DePauw College Mentors. My hobby? Traveling! I love to travel! I like anything from a basic road trip to an international expedition. When I travel through the United States I prefer to travel by motorcycle. Last summer I took a 2600 mile motorcycle trip through the Midwest. There isn’t a better way to take in the countryside than on a bike! Even though I love traveling through the United States on my bike, my favorite travel experiences are the international ones. I have been fortunate to have had many international travel experiences. I have been to 4 of the 7 continents and have got to see so many different cultures. The main reason I love to travel is because there isn’t anything more interesting than experience different cultures. There are so many different cultures in the world to see and my goal is to see as many of them as I can in my lifetime.

Sarah White

Hey everyone, my name is Sarah White. I am 19 years old and I am a freshman at DePauw. I am a Colorado native and love to travel, play music, and do anything outdoors. This includes biking, kayaking, skiing, and climbing massive volcanoes in the heart of Ecuador (shown in my picture). While at DePauw, I plan on studying Environmental Geoscience with a minor in Spanish. I have loved every second of my first year experience, which of course begins with my participation in traveling to South America with Servicio in 2012. Since arriving at DePauw, I have participated in collegiate soccer, Environmental Fellows, Environmental Club, and recently just returned from Mexico for my Winter Term (learning to scuba dive as a class). Needless to say, DePauw offers the student infinite opportunities to explore his or her interests, and participating in Servicio was an amazing first step to an incredible four years.
