Servicio Student Leadership

Servicio alumni committed to service-learning and the immersion experience have an opportunity for peer leadership.

Role and Responsibilities

Student Leaders work closely with the faculty/staff leaders to prepare and organize the team, support logistics coordination, and lead team building and critical reflection. Student Leaders will work with the faculty/staff leaders on the site-specific and cultural education for team members, stressing the importance of knowledge of the community the team is to visit, striving to enhance interaction and collaboration between team members and local people while on-site.  In this role, leaders are also expected to adhere to and support the language commitment throughout the entire program.

Why be a student leader?

  • Leadership Development- Put your leadership skills to the test in a role that supports your leadership development through: one-on-one leadership advising, a peer support system with other leaders, and the opportunity to participate in the Hartman Engaged Leaders Program.

  • Making connections- (AKA Networking) with your peers, faculty and staff, host partners...

  • Continue the experience- encourage incoming students to embrace this opportunity as you once did

  • Professional Development- build your skills, build your resume.

  • Financial support- receive a wage, in addition participation and travel expenses are covered.

How do I become a student leader?

To become a Student Leader on the Servicio en las Americas program, you must be an alumnus of the Servicio program.  Student Leader candidates are either nominated by past student or faculty/staff leaders, or they apply for the position during Fall Semester.  After the interview process, Student Leaders are elected and attend an orientation.  Duties begin in Spring Semester and continue throughout the 5-week summer program.
