Summer 2013: Greencastle to Nieva

That's right, Serivico goes to SPAIN in 2013.... Go HERE to apply for this extraordinary opportunity!

Servicio in Greencastle, INdiana

Program

The first couple weeks of the program will be spent on the DePauw campus and in the Greencastle community.  In and outside of the classroom, the group has an opportunity to become familiar with the campus, staff and faculty, and the community.  Students will work on their Spanish in the classroom and by making a pledge to ONLY speak Spanish for the duration of the program.  Through team-building and guided reflection, students will also explore concepts of community, solidarity, and global citizenship.

Service

Through service projects, the group will have a unique opportunity to learn about the community.  Possible service projects include: planting and working in the community garden, weeding and trail-clearing in the Nature Park, construction at Hope's Way, cleaning at the Putnam County Museum, and many more.

Excursions and Fun

It's summertime in Greencastle... that means fun inside and out! While on campus, the group will play sports like kickball, go for ice cream, and have free time.  Some possible excursions off campus include: canoeing and camping, trip to Indy for a baseball game, and visiting local restaurants.

Accommodations

During the on-campus portion of the program, the group will stay together in DePauw student housing.  Meals will be served in the "Hub" (food court) of the Student Union Building.

Servicio in Nieva, spain

Program

The second half of the program, the group will travel to Nieva, Spain!  Here, the group will test their Spanish speaking-skills and gain a global perspective while continuing the conversation on what it means to be a global citizen.  Classes to further enhance the cultural experience for thestudents will include cooking classes, a dance class, and some traditional Spanish games classes.  Through these classes, service projects, community activities and homestays, the group will have many opportunities for real and deep immersion in the Spanish culture.

Service

Servicio participants will have a rare opportunity to restore a historic house that is across from and belongs to the Church in the town of Nieva, and features Segovia’s “esgrafiado” (traditional designs etched in plaster on the exterior of the building). The work may include cleaning and restoring the exterior of the house and the installation of electric lighting inside as well as the small front yard and walkway of the church.  The objective is to restore this special house to be able to accommodate the pilgrims passing through Nieva en route to Santiago de Compostela.

The project will serve the people of the town of Nieva as well as the many visitors to Spain who walk the historic Camino de Santiago with 25-35 hours per week spent on the restoration work.  Cristina, the Mayor of Nieva and the town priest will be involved in an effective way to enhance this experience for the students.

Excursions* and Fun

Excursions to complement the restoration work and cultural classes will include a tour of the a typical, artistic Spanish town of Martín-Muñoz, the historic town of Santa Maria la Real de Nieva and its cloister (one of the best in all of Spain), the Pedro Bernardo petroglyphs in the town of Domingo-García, the nearby town of Coca and its Mudejar castle as well as the town of Cuéllar, a hub of Mudejar architecture and remnants of the three (3) cultures – Christianity, Judaism and Muslim – with a 12th century medieval castle and more!

In addition, the students will witness an “encierro” (running of the bulls) through the town of Bercial, learn about bee farming in the town of Espirdo whose traditions span centuries, and visit the abundant cultural monuments of Segovia. An evening excursion to a “Berbena” festival – a typical local festival that takes place all over Spain – where students will enjoy lots of dancing and celebrating with the locals.

As special opportunity has been arranged for the students to walk a part of the famous pilgramage route known as the “Camino de Santiago” complete with a walking stick and a “Santiago shell” (the pilgrim’s symbol) for each student as well as a certificate.  At the end of the brief walk, students will celebrate with a Spanish barbeque with music!

* All excursions and activities are tentative.

To offer a glimpse into the daily life of the people of Nieva, homestays will be arranged.  Stay tuned for more details!
