Space Week at DePauw: Exploring the Topography of Mars with the Augmented Reality Sandbox

June 9, 2016

On June 9 (during Space Week at DePauw leading up to the presentation by astronaut Dr. Joe Allen '59 on June 10), Prof. Scott Wilkerson and Ben Wilkerson helped visitors learn about the topography of Mars using the interactive augmented reality sandbox.  Visitors could look at Martian craters and volcanoes on Google Earth/Mars and then attempt to recreate the features in the sandbox (e.g., Olympus Mons, the Great Rift, various craters, etc.).  Visitors particularly enjoyed making it digitally "rain" on the landforms and watching the digital "water" run off the features...who says there isn't running water on Mars?
