Fred Soster - Animal-Sediment-Chemical Interactions

Research Description:

My research interests lie in the broad area of animal-sediment-chemical interactions.  I use a variety of tools and methods to study Great Lakes benthic communities, modern sediments in lacustrine and fluvial environments, and the fate of pollutant materials in the environment.  I recently completed two research projects involving Lake Erie benthic communities.  One project examined the impact of mayflies on the oxygen dynamics in Lake Erie.  The second project looked at how the benthic community structure in Lake Erie has changed over the last 25 years and what role the Dreissena mussel invasion might have had in effecting these changes.  My present research involves studying soil contamination by uranium mining and milling activities in the Moab, Utah area.  I will be collecting soil cores in and around Moab, Utah and analyzing the soils for radionuclide contamination using ICP mass spectroscopy and gamma spectroscopy.
