The fifth flight in our summer season 2013.
BASE 75 was launched from the roof of the Julian Science and Mathematics Center on Monday 17 June 2013 at 10:28 AM EDT. The flight path was predicted to be fairly long for a June launch and the recovery crew left campus about five minutes after the release. Unfortunately, the balloon ruptured prematurely at 58,400 feet and landed south of Milroy, IN at 12:07 PM EDT.
The performance of the 600 gram balloons used for the first five flights of this summer was very erratic. The maximum height of 96,000 feet was a pleasant surprise, the three flights that burst below 80,000 feet were disappointing and cannot provide data for heights that were not reached.
