David Tykvart '13 Interns at US State Department in Lima, Peru
Senior Political Science major, David Tykvart, reflects on his fall semester abroad in Lima, Peru working for the U.S. State Department.
As a Political Science major, I’ve always been the most interested in International Relations and diplomacy. This past fall, I was very fortunate to intern for the U.S. State Department at the U.S. Embassy in Lima, Peru. As an intern, I visited Americans in Peruvian prison, fingerprinted visa applicants, assisted in death cases, created numerous reports that were sent to D.C., helped organize public relations events and even got to meet Secretary of State Clinton! Getting to see foreign policy in action and all the material we discuss in class come to life made it an unforgettable semester. The United States and Peru have a strong relationship together and it will be interesting to follow U.S. policy and influence in South America. Continuing with my studies at DePauw, I hope to continue to follow Latin American politics and apply what I learned through State in the classroom. Peru was an amazing experience and I look forward to going back one day in the future!
