Introduction to Women's Studies.

WS 140 serves as a prerequisite for the major and minor in Women’s Studies, as well as a survey course that introduces students to the interdisciplinary nature of the field. Our main aim is to begin to understand human behavior through a focus on how gender shapes cultures and the institutions that structure them. Students will explore the study of women and feminism by examining the intersections of race, class, sexuality, and disability with gender across cultural and disciplinary contexts. We will develop a framework for thinking at the intersections of identity, politics, culture and knowledge. Topics will include feminism and women’s movements; gender socialization; the body; globalization; violence against women; and women’s resistance and activism.

Offered every semester in multiple sections.
