Megan May '13

“I absolutely loved working with microbes and having the mixture of laboratory and field work. My DePauw research experience has helped me figure out what I want to work with in the future."

Alicia Whitney '13

“It was the perfect project for me! I loved getting to work both in the field and the lab. Plus, I ended up getting really interesting results and I learned a lot! I have found that I have learned more by practically applying my knowledge from textbooks, than from the actual textbooks themselves."

Carly Dutkiewicz

“The Science Research Fellows program has given me the knowledge of how to conduct research, and something I’ve learned is that there is never an end to research and to keep questioning. This is something that I can apply to whatever I do after DePauw.”

Katherine Hill '13

“DePauw’s liberal arts approach to education has allowed me so many opportunities throughout my four years. I’ve done three separate research projects, presented findings at a national research conference, became certified as an EMT, worked over 1500 hours as an EMT, and am getting to travel to Ecuador to provide and study health care in an underserved area."

Elizabeth Weingartner '13

“I love knowing that, with a career in research, I will be able to critically think and problem solve every day and then immediately see my ideas go into action.”

Rachel Gearinger '13

“I loved the freedom I was given to discover science on my own. I am very fortunate for the independence I have been given from the very beginning of my research career. People have told me from the beginning how lucky I am to already have these experiences under my belt.”

Polly Haight '13

“Applying to the Science Research Fellows was one of the best decisions we have ever made. I honestly couldn’t say what I would have otherwise done for the past two summers, and never would I have been so motivated to apply for and obtain a prestigious research internship in fields that truly interested me.”

Amy Richmond '13

Amy started a long-term research project with biochemistry professor Dan Gurnon studying the protein Tax. Amy commented that this protein “has been implicated in leukemia and lymphoma, and only one other lab in the country is researching it! That’s crazy. This research gave me the opportunity to really contribute to the field, and feel like I can actually make an impact as an undergrad.”

Bradley Wethington '13

“I remember wondering ‘What is research, and why would I ever want to do it?’ My eyes were opened to the idea of research after my research experience at DePauw even before my first-year.”

Schyler Cook '13

“This project has helped me grow as a scientist in so many ways. My laboratory techniques feel second nature, as does presenting and explaining my research to a variety of audiences. The biggest challenge usually isn’t in the lab itself, but instead explaining the advanced chemistry to a non-chemistry or even non-science audience.”

Kelly Hoerst '13

“I’ve really enjoyed having the chance to explore different facets of both academia and industry. I think that it has allowed me to be unbiased when making important decisions that will affect my future.”

Rachel Rominger '13

“Even as a prospective student, I could tell that this was a special program. I didn’t know much about research, but I loved science and wanted to see how I could start applying it and making it practical. The SRF program seemed like an incredible opportunity; I couldn’t believe that they were giving students in their first semester the opportunity to get involved in research.”

Kelly Harms '13

“Research has always intrigued me. I love the idea of trial and error infused with figuring out how things work. Through SRF, I have had the opportunity to participate in research in a variety of disciplines that I would have never experienced without the program,”

Liz Anichini '12

My research experience in biology was really helpful in designing my independent research project in Public Health. Even though social science research is very different in methodology, the experience I gained in SRF designing a project, organizing results in a meaningful way and writing a clear and concise report were invaluable when I had to execute a project completely on my own. I hadn’t realized how much I had learned about research itself until I had to apply my skills to a completely different subject.
