Science fiction
and surrealism are two of the most influential modalities of
fantasy in modern art and thought. But science fiction is by
definition fantasy grounded in rationality, whereas the
surrealists attacked the claims of rationality, or sought
alternatives that would bypass reason altogether. So, how is it
that artists often work to combine the two modes? I'll explore
some forms of SF art, chiefly visual representations, which seem
to call into question the hard distinctions between the styles,
and between the world views that animate them.
