Timetable for Pre-medical Students

First Year

  • Attend orientation session for Health Sciences.
  • Discuss options for beginning the pre-med curriculum with academic adviser and/or a member of the Health Sciences Advising Committee.
  • Join the Health Science Mailing List. Most information about special programs for health science students is sent out via this E-mail distribution list. Contact Ken Kirkpatrick to get on the list.
  • Explore volunteer activities relevant to a medical career.
  • Get to know your professors.
  • Attend meetings of the Health Science club, departmental organizations (e.g., Biology Club, Chemistry Club), and organizations like Women in Science.
  • Begin to explore internship or service trip possibilities for future Winter Terms. Many students begin applying for Winter Term internships and programs in the Spring semester of their first year. Contact the Winter Term Office in Academic Affairs for more information.
  • Attend the Health Sciences Career Fair. (Contact Career Services for more information.)

Sophomore Year

  • Make final preparations for Winter Term
  • Attend the "Get Acquainted with the MCAT" sessions in the ARC.
  • Take the Verbal Reasoning diagnostic test for the MCAT.
  • Explore medical school web sites and catalogs. Be sure you are satisfying course work requirements for medical schools you might apply to. (See "Health Science Links" for web access to catalogs and other resources.)
  • Attend the Health Sciences Career Fair.

Junior Year

Fall Semester

  • Begin MCAT preparation. "Get Acquainted with the MCAT" sessions will help you set up a study strategy and a schedule, familiarize you with review and practice test materials, and evaluate your test-taking skills.
  • Attend medical school admissions seminars (Indiana, Illinois, etc.)
  • Make final preparations for Winter Term.
  • Attend the Health Sciences Career Fair.

Spring Semester

  • Intensify MCAT preparation, emphasizing timed practice examinations.
  • Submit MCAT Application on time (January).
  • Get more information on medical schools and narrow your choices.
  • Take the MCAT (mid-April)
  • Attend the Medical School Application workshop offered by the Health Sciences Advising Committee (end of April).
  • Discuss letters of recommendation with professors and others. Provide them with copies of your resume or personal information sheet and your AMCAS personal statement. Let them know what schools you will be applying to. When you get a secondary application that requires letters, they will be ready to write them.
  • Obtain a copy of the AAMCAS application and prepare to submit it early in the summer. Don't forget to request transcripts before you leave.

Senior Year

  • Complete supplemental applications. Check with schools to make sure all materials, including letters of recommendation, have been received.
  • Participate in mock interview workshops at the Health Sciences Career Fair. Schedule addition interview preparations with Career Services and/or the S-Center.
  • Review a list of commonly asked interview questions.
  • Visit medical schools for interviews (at their request).
  • Sit around waiting for medical school decisions, then decide which school to attend.
  • Pass the rest of your courses.
