Summer Internships: Gorée Institute

Founded in 1992, the Gorée Institute is an independent Public Interest Organization (PIO), dedicated to promoting peaceful, self-reliant, and open societies in Africa through partnership among state and inner-state authorities. The Gorée Institute serves as a “facilitative organization which builds alliances around the objectives of promoting electoral reform, peace building, community development, and cultural development in Africa”. These pursuits collectively form the basis for the Institute’s African Peace Activities program, which promotes durable and innovative approaches to ending violent conflict in Africa. The Gorée Institute is located on Gorée Island, approximately two miles from Dakar, Senegal. The proposed internship will allow engagement in dynamic, multinational peace initiatives in West Africa, and is being offered through the generosity of Gorée Institute, and its dedicated staff. Additional information can be found at: www.goreeinstitute.org/.

The intern will be integrated among the staff at Gorée Institute, providing support for IT applications, bibliographic and research projects, and administrative assistance. The internship will commence at the discretion of Gorée Institute, lasting approximately eight weeks during the summer months. Compensation for satisfactory performance includes transportation to and from Gorée Institute, as well as a living stipend for room and board expenses. No course fee applies for this arrangement.

A background consisting of the following would be especially welcome, but not required: a practical command of the French language, computer/IT skills (including, but not limited to the creation and manipulation of databases and websites), a familiarity with and passion for understanding current events and issues facing African nations, and a commitment to (and demonstrated history of) professional behavior. Additionally, the applicant must demonstrate sufficient maturity to handle the various challenges of living and contributing in an international community. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is expected. *A valid passport (good through February 2009 or beyond) will also be required. (Alternatively, appropriate documentation may be submitted, demonstrating that an application for a passport has been initiated).

Applications will be due to the Center for International & Experiential Education (Durham House) no later than Friday, April 25, 2008.
