"Networking: Developing and Utilizing Contacts in the Job Search"
Advice from DPU Alumni
- Do as much research as possible prior to starting the networking process. The more knowledgeable and prepared a student is prior to contacting a prospective member of their network, the more likely they are to achieve immediate results. Always be able to answer the questions, "What are you looking to do?"
- Be prepared. I especially enjoy conversations with people who have taken the time to learn about my organization and industry, especially when compared to those who haven't done research and don't have specific questions.
- Follow-up is critical. A thank-you note is not enough. People need to know what the ultimate outcome was of your request, even if they were not able to help.
- Someone who does not say "thank you" or has no appreciation for my time is a problem. I'm happy to help, but it is important to know that the assistance/advice provided is appreciated.
- If your cover letter or resume states that you will be calling to follow up--do it!
- Manners! Say thank you, yes not yeah, etc. Do some homework on the company before contacting--shows great initiative and always makes me more willing to help.
- While creating the initial contact may sometimes be awkward, once the conversation has started, alums are open to giving honest critiques and feedback.

Alum Profile
Colin O'Flaherty '04
- Current job: Currently I am the production coordinator for the show “So You Think You Can Dance.” Basically this means I coordinate all aspects of the production of the show. I deal with every department and make sure we have all the necessities to making the show happen. From hiring production assistants to dealing with many different vendors.
- Career path: My career path started when I came out to Los Angeles between my junior and senior year and I got a job as an intern on a low budget independent feature film. I kept those contacts and then when I came out after graduation they helped me get a job as production assistant. I worked on a couple shows as a production assistant and within a year I was an assistant production coordinator. After being an assistant production coordinator on one show my next job was as a production coordinator.
- Activities at DePauw?: At DePauw I was involved in the depauw.year1 Mentor Program, was a Peer Mentor, Relay for Life co-chair, IFC, Greek Relations Task Force, and the Covenant Task Force
- How has DePauw influenced your success?: DePauw really helped bring out a drive in me that I hadn’t seen before. So many people around you so driven to succeed is contagious. The unique ability to get involved in so many different organizations and deal with many different people situations was also very valuable. DePauw really just helped me learn about the type of person I was and what I was really capable of accomplishing. It gave me the confidence I needed to jump into the “real world.”
- Career advice: If you’re not sure, try it. If you don’t like it, get out. Don’t settle.
- Home: Granada Hills, CA
- Activities in free time: Go to the beach, play 16” softball, just try to relax and enjoy the weather in California
