Sample Starter Phrases/Conversations with DePauw alumni (or other individuals).

There are a number of reasons to contact an individual in connection with your career planning and job search.  The reason(s) you are contacting someone will dictate what you will initially say to them, in writing or over the phone.

Some sample starter phrases that you might use in writing, or over the phone, include:

  • I am interested in getting into the public relations field in Atlanta and would like to get some of your ideas and suggestions, if possible.
  • The advertising industry is one of the fields I am considering after graduating from DePauw.  At this point I am simply gathering information and trying to learn more about the advertising field.  Could we set up a time to talk in person or over the phone to discuss some of my questions?
  • I have an interest in journalism and in using my writing skills; in fact, last summer I worked for The Herald Times in Bloomington, Indiana.  Could you suggest several small Midwestern newspapers that I could contact about full-time employment after I graduate this May?
