Dear Ms. Doe,

I am a DePauw University freshman applying for a summer internship in Senator Bayh's Indianapolis Office. After speaking with James Dean, my mentor and supervisor during my internship in Mayor Bart Peterson's Office, he suggested that this internship would be a wonderful opportunity for me. The position seems to fit well with my experience and my future career interests. After working in city government last summer, I am eager to participate in the federal government's service of all Hoosiers.

This internship requires strong writing and research skills, adaptability to a fast-paced environment, and enthusiasm. In my experience as an intern in the Indianapolis Mayor's Office, I wrote several emails and letters to constituents and researched a variety of issues in order to fully respond to constituent concerns. I also spent several weeks in the Communication Department filling in for a press assistant and preparing last minute materials for press conferences. Those experiences left me prepared to succeed in a fast-paced and often tense environment. In addition, I also gained event planning experience by working with food vendors and program coordinators for Canal Fest 2004 as well as planning public art exhibits in the Mayor's Office. As an intern, I also restructured the system for filing press clippings. My enthusiasm for learning, completing projects, and helping others is best demonstrated by my academic success, campus involvements, adn community service projects detailed on my enclosed resume.

I'm very excited about the possibility of working with Senator Bayh and his constituents this summer.
