Guidelines for Readmission of Students

The readmission process begins with the following steps:

  • file a complete application for readmission in the Registrar's Office by the relevant deadline (see below)
  • agree to make appropriate housing arrangements
  • meet all financial obligations to the University
  • provide an official transcript showing satisfactory work elsewhere, if additional school work has been done
  • document accurately activities undertaken since leaving DePauw

Deadlines for Readmission Applications

For Fall semester ... July 1
For Winter Term ... Nov. 1
For Spring semester ... Dec. 1

Students who leave DePauw University in good academic standing for reasons other than medical (physical or emotional) or disciplinary action generally are readmitted.

Medical/Mental Health Withdrawal

Students who leave DePauw for medical or mental health reasons, or who receive medical or mental health treatment or consultation during their withdrawal must submit a letter recommending their return, as indicated on the Application for Readmission. This letter should be written by the physician and/or mental health professional who provided treatment/consultation during the withdrawal, and should be forwarded to the Director of Counseling in Student Affairs and/or the University Physician in the Health Services.

The letter should document information including a) the nature of the medical or psychological condition, b) the current state of that condition, and c) a recommendation of the student's readiness to return to DePauw. In some cases, the student will be contacted by the Director of Counseling and/or the University Physician, requesting permission to discuss the content of the letter with the physician and/or mental health professional.

Poor Academic Performance Withdrawal

Student who leave because of poor academic performance will be evaluated on their demonstrated readiness to return to DePauw's academic environment and the likelihood of their eventual successful completion of a degree in a timely manner. Students can apply for readmission after being away one semester; however, experience has shown that in many cases a full year's separation from DePauw increases the likelihood of academic success. Readmission decisions will be based on the following criteria:

  • student's insight into what caused the original academic difficulty
  • evidence that the things that prevented successful academic performance previously have changed positively
  • the amount of time spent away from DePauw and that the time has been used productively (statements from employers or others may be requested)
  • academic achievement, if undertaken, has improved substantially
