Dougas B. White Memorial Travel Award

The Douglas B. White Memorial Travel Fund award is designated for Winter Term travel and study to the Pacific Rim, Africa, or South Asia. The fund is the result of a memorial gift from the parents of Doug White, a DePauw student who was tragically killed in a car accident in 1993 in Australia.

Interested students must prepare and submit a detailed project proposal, which will be evaluated on the basis of its thoughtfulness and evidence of the project’s educational benefit. Your proposal must be endorsed by a member of the faculty, who agrees to serve as project supervisor. Proposals are considered by a committee consisting of the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and members of the faculty.

To receive an award, students must be in good academic standing (as verified by the Registrar’s Office) and must have all financial obligations current as of application date (as verified by the Business Office). Financial need will be considered in making the awards, and all applicants must have current FAFSA forms on file with the Financial Aid office. Because funds are limited, not all worthwhile projects can be funded. Successful applicants will be asked to contribute in part to their expenses; financial awards generally consist of the cost of the round-trip airline ticket and a portion of room and board expenses. Applicants are asked to submit four copies of the following application materials to the Winter Term Office, Durham House, by Friday, October 31, 2008.

The successful application will include the following:

  • A detailed description of your proposed project. What will be the focus of your study? How will your study be conducted? Why is this project of interest to you? Describe your qualifications for carrying out the project. Show how the project can be reasonably accomplished in the allotted period of time. What do you hope to gain from your experience?
  • A plan for how you will share your experience with the DePauw community upon your return.
  • Supporting materials, as necessary, which may include proposed contacts and arrangements, if you plan an independent study project, the name and address of the host sponsor, if you plan an internship, or program documentation, if you plan to participate in an organized program.
  • A detailed budget estimate for the project.
  • An endorsement section in which you and your faculty supervisor sign off on the project as proposed.
