Study at Another School

Like DePauw, many other institutions offer short-term courses during the month of January that are appropriately in the spirit of Winter Term. DePauw students may spend Winter Term on the campus of another 4-1-4 college, or participate in a course sponsored by an independent institution. If you intend to pursue enrollment in a course offered by a separate institution during Winter Term, please schedule an appointment with a Winter Term advisor to communicate your intentions and to verify that your plans are consistent with office expectations.

Registration Guidelines

1 After you have selected a project taking place at another institution or approved organization, you need to confirm that you may register for the Winter Term at that institution. Request a confirmation letter (most likely from that institution's Admissions Office or Registrar's Office), which you must submit to the Winter Term office with your application form. You will also need to provide a copy of the course description from that institution's webpage or catalog.

You are responsible for all registration and other fees at the other institution. Sometimes an exchange with no additional tuition may be made if a student from that institution wishes to participate in a DePauw Winter Term course.

2 Important Deadline, Friday, October 30, 2009: Fill out and sign the application form. Be sure to indicate the specific dates you will be at the school, organization, or project. Submit the application form, confirmation letter, course description, and release form (which must be signed by you and your parents) to the Winter Term Office for approval no later the October due date.

Note: You may not change off-campus projects after the application deadline. If a problem requires your withdrawal from this Winter Term project after registration, and if you intend to earn a Winter Term credit this year, you must register for an on-campus course.

3 Student Financial Support Applications: If you intend to complete a project at another school or organization and wish to apply for an award from the Winter Term Student Financial Support program, you must submit the Student Support Application by October 30, 2009. There is a separate application form for Student Financial Support, which is available in the Winter Term Office, and online.

4 Orientation: Students who are completing projects at another school or organization will be expected to review pre-departure orientation material available on Moodle. You will receive notification about this material once you become registered for Winter Term.

5 Reflective Summary: After completing your project or course, prepare and submit to the Winter Term office a 3-5 page reflective, synthesizing paper summarizing your experience by the start of second semester classes.

6 Confirmation: In order to receive credit for your project, you must also submit to the Winter Term office by the beginning of February an official confirmation of completion (transcript, certificate, etc.) from the school or organization.
