9-10:15 a.m. *Panel Discussion:  Anti-smoking and Anti-obesity Campaigns:  Medical Science versus Individual Rights
According to a recent report from CNN, obesity is a bigger health crisis globally than hunger and is the leading cause of physical and medical disabilities.  The report states that the health burden from elevated body mass indexes surpasses that from hunger.  In September 2012, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg won health board approval of a proposed ban on the sale of sugary drinks in containers larger than 16 ounces in public venues.  Is this an infringement on personal freedom?  What about the rest of a fast food meal which typically contains lots of calories and fat?  Will a policy aimed at changing portion sizes be next?
Pulliam Center for Contemporary Media, Watson Forum
10:30-11:45a.m. *Panel Discussion: Protecting the Rights of the Mentally Ill while Protecting Our Communities
In the wake of the recent mass shootings, Americans are debating the need to protect our communities, protect the rights of the mentally ill and assess the mental health care system.   A glance at the numbers offers some insight into the extent of the issue: One quarter of adults suffer from a "diagnosable mental disorder in a given year," while 6% of U.S. adults have what can be considered a "serious mental illness," according to the National Institute of Mental Health.  Research conducted at the Centers for Disease Control also indicates that 3.4% of non-institutionalized adults suffer from "serious psychological distress" in a given month.  How do we protect our communities while protecting the rights of the mentally ill?
