| 9-10:15 a.m. | Alumni College: "This I Believe" - Storytelling About Our Core Values Back in the early 1950s Edward R. Murrow hosted a radio series called “This I Believe.” People from all walks of life shared essays describing core values that guided their daily lives. In those confusing and troubled times, Murrow said, “Never has the need for personal philosophies of this kind been so urgent.” The need remains strong 60 years later. This morning, classmates Lee Livingston Arend ’63, Anne Husted Burleigh ’63, Pete Egbert ’63, Bob McClure ’63, Denny Priser ’63, Kathy Spangler Vashaw ’63 and Bud Walters ’63 will share their personal stories. Bob Steele ’69, director of The Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics and Distinguished Professor of Journalism Ethics, will lead this conversation about “This I Believe” stories. Steele will share how this type of essay enriches the experience of current DePauw students in his classes. These stories will certainly provide food for thought. Perhaps they will also stimulate the listeners to think about personal values and how they make a difference in one’s own life. Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics, auditorium |

The storytellers include Karen Koning Abu Zayd ’63, Dick Andrews ’63, Barbara Melum Carnal ’63, Sam Chattin ’63, Sarah Marks Richards ’63, Bill Schwein ’63 and Saundra Lawson Taylor ’63. As their stories unfold, the listeners will learn how each person was drawn in a specific direction and how DePauw may or may not have influenced their choices. Perhaps these stories will have the audience thinking about how to share their own stories. The speakers may inspire the listeners to explore a new interest or complete an unfinished project. Whatever the outcome, this will be an interesting conversation for everyone. Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics, auditorium |
