9-10:15 a.m. Alumni College: "This I Believe" - Storytelling About Our Core Values
Back in the early 1950s Edward R. Murrow hosted a radio series called “This I Believe.”  People from all walks of life shared essays describing core values that guided their daily lives.  In those confusing and troubled times, Murrow said, “Never has the need for personal philosophies of this kind been so urgent.”  The need remains strong 60 years later.  This morning, classmates Lee Livingston Arend ’63, Anne Husted Burleigh ’63, Pete Egbert ’63, Bob McClure ’63, Denny Priser ’63, Kathy Spangler Vashaw ’63 and Bud Walters ’63 will share their personal stories.  Bob Steele ’69, director of The Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics and Distinguished Professor of Journalism Ethics, will lead this conversation about “This I Believe” stories.  Steele will share how this type of essay enriches the experience of current DePauw students in his classes.  These stories will certainly provide food for thought.  Perhaps they will also stimulate the listeners to think about personal values and how they make a difference in one’s own life.

Everybody has an interesting personal story.  We have all had diverse life experiences.  Several members of the Class of 1963 will share some of the experiences they have had in the 50 years since their graduation.  The storytellers include Karen Koning Abu Zayd ’63, Dick Andrews ’63, Barbara Melum Carnal ’63, Sam Chattin ’63, Sarah Marks Richards ’63, Bill Schwein ’63 and Saundra Lawson Taylor ’63.  As their stories unfold, the listeners will learn how each person was drawn in a specific direction and how DePauw may or may not have influenced their choices.  Perhaps these stories will have the audience thinking about how to share their own stories.  The speakers may inspire the listeners to explore a new interest or complete an unfinished project.  Whatever the outcome, this will be an interesting conversation for everyone.

Russell Page, in his book of the same name tells us, “If you wish to make anything grow, you must understand it, and understand it in a very real sense. 'Green fingers' are a fact, and a mystery only to the unpracticed. But green fingers are the extensions of a verdant heart.” Local food movements, home gardens and food co-ops are springing up all over the country as a response to our desire to know where our food is coming from and to have a hand in creating tasty fare. DePauw has joined that discussion by creating a campus farm a place to learn first hand about growing food and a place to learn about yourself. Join Carol Steele, DePauw's sustainability director, for a discussion of food and farming at DePauw.
