Embracing the Self-Made Movement in Postwar Japan Thursday, November 3, 2016, 11:40am Peeler Art Center, University Gallery (upper level) As Japan struggled to forge a new sense of self in the postwar years, many Japanese artists abandoned old methods of artmaking in favor of the “creative prints” movement. Join Dr. Hiroko Chiba (Professor of Modern Languages) and Craig Hadley (Gallery Director) for a discussion centered on this pivotal moment in Japanese art history, and view 40 postwar prints from the DePauw University permanent art collection. Artist Lecture with Blane De St. Croix Where Do We Migrate To? Tuesday, October 25, 2016, 4:15pm Peeler Auditorium Blane De St. Croix’s work explores the geopolitical landscape through sculpture, installation, and work on paper. His research based method incorporates on the ground site visits, aerial fly-overs, photographic documentation, interviews, internet mining, and satellite imagery. Together, his artworks and research seek to facilitate an increased understanding of the shared social, political, environmental, and cultural climate challenges we face, both within our local communities, and in the international arena.Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Blane De St. Croix was educated at Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (M.F.A. Sculpture) and Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, Massachusetts (B.F.A. Sculpture with distinction). His work is represented by Fredericks & Freiser, New York, NY. Currently, he has two works in the exhibition Where Do We Migrate To? here at the Peeler Art Center. Join us on Tuesday October 25 at 4:15PM in the Peeler Auditorium to hear Blane discuss his work and his journey as an artist. |

Yi Thursday, October 6, 2016, 4:15pm Peeler Art Center, Auditorium An investigation of our terrestrial existence and experience critically affect Jason S. Yi’s work. The created forms and images become amalgamations of natural and built surroundings addressing the environmental and societal issues shaping the world. He incorporates humble materials and detritus to produce reimagined landscapes that reflect and critique conditions of contemporary society. |

Prosser Jr. ‘65, former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice, for a Collectors’ Talk in the University Gallery, upper level on Tuesday, September 20, at 4:15PM. Prosser’s love for Japanese abstract prints has been a tremendous asset to the creation and production of our exhibition: Abstract Traditions: Postwar Japanese Prints from the DePauw University Permanent Art Collection. During his talk, Prosser hopes to convey to you the wonders and excitement of becoming an avid collector. Provided with support from the Arthur E. Artist Lecture with Rebecca Seeman Thursday, September 15, 2016, 4:15pm Peeler Art Center, Auditorium Rebecca Seeman manipulates and arrays multiples of humble household castoffs. In repurposing them she creates aesthetic spaces using directed light and cast shadows to engage the walls’ dimensions and surfaces in collaboration with the objects. Despite the lack of overt physicality the works may have an imaginary spatial expanse that, with the points of light, may also suggest faraway astral bodies. |

Percussion@Peeler: StereoType Wednesday, May 4, 2016, 6:30 – 7:30pm Peeler Art Center, University Gallery (lower level) The DePauw Percussion Ensemble presents its annual program of contemporary solo and chamber works for percussion, composed and improvised, in a non-traditional concert setting. Directed by Dr. Bonnie Whiting Smith, the one-hour performance fuses contemporary art and music in the galleries at Peeler. Refreshments will be served following the event. |

StereoType lecture with curator Ginger Duggan Tuesday, April 12, 2016, 4:15pm Peeler Art Center, Auditorium Historically, typography has been designed with two axes in mind, x and y. Today, in contrast, designers are broadening their perceptions about type to accommodate the added dimensions of a digital experiential world. Recent innovations in type design take principles of animation, interactivity, and kinetic movement and combine them with traditional components of typography, resulting in pioneering explorations in motion typography. Join Ginger Duggan, co-curator of StereoType, for an evening lecture which explores the widening field of contemporary typography and the artists represented in the exhibition.
