Greencastle, Ind. - Judy George, who organized the first varsity-level field hockey team at DePauw University and coached the sport for over 30 years, has announced her retirement from coaching effective at the end of the current academic year. She will continue as Professor of Health and Physical Performance at the University.
A 1962 Miami (Ohio ) University graduate, George joined the DePauw faculty in 1965 and later coached field hockey on a club basis. Since the sport became varsity, George's teams amassed over 250 wins.
In 1989, she earned the Coaches Advisory Roundtable Award from the Women's Sports foundation and was the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year in 1990 after leading the Tigers to their first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament. George earned the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport Pathfinder Award for Indiana in 1998. Additionally, she has earned numerous more conference and district coach of the year honors.
George, who earned an M.S. degree in 1965 from Indiana University, as well as a P.E.Dir. degree in 1974, has been an advocate for women's sports issues and has had opinion editorials and studies published in newspapers and journals across the country. She also served as Health and Physical Performance department chair until last June.
"Judy has made a tremendous impact not only at DePauw, but in the sport of field hockey as a whole," DePauw Director of Athletics Page Cotton said. "She's a pioneer in the sport and the strong tradition built over the years at DePauw is due to her efforts."
A national search is underway for George's replacement.
