DePauw runs down Millsaps, 41-10

GREENCASTLE, IND. – The DePauw rushing game which had only totaled 365 yards in the first six games came alive in the Tigers’ 41-10 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference home win over Millsaps. DePauw rushed for a season-high 242 yards with freshman Scott Thies leading the way with 155 yards in 23 carries along with one touchdown. The win lifts the Tigers to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the SCAC and snaps their three-game losing streak. Millsaps falls to 2-5 and 1-2.

The Tigers scored on their first possession of the game as senior quarterback Kurt Hare directed a drive that ended with his eight-yard pass on third down to junior Joe Schoen. The possession covered 10 plays and 86 yards with Hare completing all four passes he attempted.

After a short Majors punt, DePauw took over on the visitors’ 37 and needed just four running plays to punch in another score. Thies carried the final 11 with 5:05 left in the first to make it 14-0.

Millsaps cut the margin to a touchdown on a 16-yard pass play from junior quarterback Blake Huggard to senior Jason Parsley with 12:16 left in t second. They then cut the lead to four after junior Derrick McNeal booted a 22-yard field goal with 31 seconds left in the half, but that would be their last score of the game.

DePauw opened the second half with a five-play, 60-yard scoring drive that included Hare’s four-of-four performance. His final pass of the series was to senior tight end Tyler Kelley for a 34-yard touchdown to make it 20-10 with 12 minutes left in the third.

Hare rushed in from one yard late in the third to make it 27-10 and threw a 24-yard strike to Schoen early in the fourth. The Tigers’ final score came on senior defensive back Josh Johnson’s 30-yard interception return on the first play following the touchdown.

On a cold, blustery day with winds gusting over 30 miles-per-hour from the northwest, Hare completed 15 of 22 passes for 156 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. His top receiver was Schoen with six catches for 52 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Millsaps senior running back Mike McKenzie came into the game averaging nearly 114 yards per contest, but was held to 48 on 12 carries. Huggard completed 14 of 27 passes for 138 yards and a score, but was picked off twice. Parsley caught six passes for 85 yards.

Senior linebacker Andy Nardo led the Tigers with 10 tackles, while freshman linebacker William Jorden led the Majors with 11 and senior defensive lineman Byron Blackwell followed with 10.

DePauw hosts Centre College next Saturday, while Millsaps is also home to Sewanee.
