SERIES RECORD: Trinity leads the series 1-0 after taking the first meeting last year in Greencastle by a 34-18 score.

COACHES:
Nick Mourouzis is in his 19th season and his teams have compiled a 111-67-4 record. The 1959 Miami University graduate has won more games than any football coach in DePauw history and was the ICAC Coach of the Year in 1990 and 1996 after leading the Tigers to the conference championship both years. He ranks 21st among active Division III coaches in terms of victories.

Steve Mohr is in his 10th season at Trinity with a record of 60-37. He has taken the Tigers to six straight SCAC titles and to the NCAA Division III playoff each of the last two seasons including a spot in the semifinals a year ago.

LAST WEEK:
The Tigers opened the road portion of the season with a 27-21 win at Hope. Kurt Hare completed 23 of 37 passes for a career-high 288 yards. The Tigers scored twice in the fourth quarter to overcome an eight-point deficit. Trinity remained unbeaten with a 48-7 victory at Austin as they scored 28 first-quarter points. Quarterback Michael Burton, completed 14 of 20 passes for 224 yards and five touchdowns in a little over one half of action.

WEEK THREE MVPs:
Two Tigers earned MVP honors last week with Kurt Hare (Sr., Tipton, Ind./Tipton) on offense and Josh Johnson (Sr., Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon) on defense getting the nod. Hare completed 23 of 37 passes for a career-high 288 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. Johnson, a defensive back, recorded five solos or first hits and two assists (from film evaluation) and forced a fumble in the Tigers’ 27-21 win at Hope.

SCOUTING TRINITY:
The Trinity Tigers return 20 starters from the national semifinal team that lost to eventual national champion Mount Union by just five points. Trinity is ranked second in every Division III poll behind three-time defending champion Mount Union.

Offensively, quarterback Michael Burton leads the way after being named the Melberger Award winner as the best player in Division III last year. This year he is one of the top ranked quarterbacks in the nation with an efficiency rating of 165.31. He’s already tossed 11 touchdown passes in just 91 attempts and completed 68 percent of his passes for 692 yards. His top receivers are Bo Edwards (15 rec., 214 yds., 6 TDs), Adam Coffman (13 rec., 188 yds.) and Canaan Factor (9 rec., 122 yds.). Damond Garza runs behind a solid offensive line and averages 99.0 yards per contest. Anchoring the line is tackle David Coney who was named the 1998 Offensive Lineman of the Year by Football Gazette.

On defense, Trinity is led by SCAC preseason tri-defensive player of the year John Paul Visosky and 1998 all-SCAC choice Jeremy Day at the linebacker positions. Chris Ulmo handles the punting duties and is averaging nearly 40 yards per punt. The Tigers have allowed their three opponents this season just 254 yards of offense per game and only 84 on the ground.

REVIEWING LAST YEAR’S MEETING:
DePauw ran into a tough Trinity team and before the first quarter was over, the visitors had a 21-0 lead. Trinity scored on its third, fifth and 12th plays from scrimmage with the second and third scores coming off Tiger mistakes. The first was an interception and the second on a failed punt snap.
The Tigers did battle back with two second-quarter scores. Brian Hurey booted a 33-yard field goal and receiver Joe Schoen tossed a 40-yard pass to Ryan McGuffey to cut the margin to 21-10 with 2:33 left. Trinity, however, used the clock well in covering 63 yards in 14 plays and using all but two seconds of the half to take a 28-10 advantage at the break.
The teams battled through a scoreless third quarter even though the Tigers missed an opportunity inside Trinity’s red zone. DePauw cut the margin to 28-18 early in the fourth as Schoen was on the receiving end of an eight-yard pass from Kurt Hare. Schoen also caught the two-point conversion pass.
The DePauw defense shut down Trinity without a first down over the next two possessions, but an interception and a missed field goal kept DePauw from mounting a comeback. Trinity then engineered a 13 play, 75-yard drive that consumed 7:02 and culminated in a 15-yard scoring pass and put the game away. During that drive, the visiting Tigers converted three third down situations and one fourth down play.
Trinity outgained DePauw 420-284 with 338 of those yards coming through the air. Trinity quarterback Michael Burton completed 26 of 46 passes for 338 yards and four touchdowns. The Tiger defense did limit Trinity to just 82 yards rushing on 32 attempts. DePauw also picked off four Trinity passes including two by Joe Rogowski.
DePauw quarterback Kurt Hare made his first collegiate start in what would be his only loss as a starter.

TIGER NOTES:
Kurt Hare’s 288 passing yards against Hope were a career best … Hare is now 7-3 as a starter at quarterback … The Tigers have attempted 171 consecutive passes without being sacked dating back to the first half of the Rose-Hulman game on 11/7/98 … Hare’s 1,977 career passing yards rank 12th in school history. He needs 22 more to surpass Dan Breckenridge’s (1982-85) 1,998 and an additional 82 to pass Rich Boling’s (1975-77) 2,048 … Joe Schoen’s eight catches against Hope were the most by a DePauw receiver in a game since Johnathon Stigall caught nine against Hope in 1997 … His 152 receiving yards were the most since Stigall’s 196 yards against Hope in 1997 … DePauw’s touchdown on the opening drive against Hope was their first touchdown during a first quarter this season … Hare leads the SCAC in total offense with 253 yards per game … Schoen is tops in the conference in receiving yards per game with 107.0 and all-purpose yards per game with 170.3 … The Tigers have won their last four road games and 13 of the last 16 … Saturday’s game is the Tigers’ first-ever in the state of Texas … DePauw received votes in the latest American Football Coaches Association Division III poll … The Tigers’ 114-player roster consists of 57 freshmen, 20 sophomores, 21 juniors and 16 seniors … Players on the 1999 squad hail from 12 different states led by Indiana with 68, Illinois with 14 and Florida with 13.
