DePauw vs. Blackburn Game Notes


GAME INFORMATION

The Tigers take on the Blackburn College Beavers at Blackburn Stadium in Carlinville, Illinois, with kickoff at 1:30 p.m. The Tigers are 1-4 after defeating Sewanee last week, 19-16. Blackburn is 1-5 on the year after beating Rockford, 13-6, last Saturday. The WGRE (91.5 FM) broadcast begins at 1:10 p.m.

 

SERIES RECORD

This is the first meeting between the two schools.

 

COACHES

DePauw's Nick Mourouzis is in his 20th season with the Tigers and his teams have posted a 116-74-4 record. Jim Chinn is in his second season at Blackburn with a 3-13 record.

SCOUTING BLACKBURN
Blackburn is 1-5 on the season after defeating Rockford last Saturday by a 13-6 score. The five losses have come to Illinois College (44-7), MacMurray (53-7), Northwestern College (45-0), Millikin (68-6) and Westminster (36-25).

 

In the win over Rockford, the Beavers were led by 118 rushing yards in 21 carries and one touchdown from Ricky Colbert and 117 passing yards and a scoring pass from Brad Carrell. His top receiver was Dewayne Johnson with four catches for 31 yards and Tim Edwards with three grabs totaling 46 yards and a touchdown.

 

The defense limited Rockford to just 219 yards of offense and only 34 through the air. They recorded two sacks and were led by Jeff Ries with 16 tackles, Donald Van Giesen with 14 and Michael Mack with 10. They also recovered six Rockford fumbles and intercepted a pass.

THE LAST DEPAUW GAME (full story)
Freshman David Blackburn's interception in the end zone with just 28 seconds left preserved DePauw's first victory of the season and handed visiting Sewanee its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference loss. DePauw improved to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the SCAC, while Sewanee fell to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

NATIONAL RANKINGS
Joe Schoen ranks 12th in Division III with 8.0 receptions per game and 21st with 105.6 receiving yards per game, while Dan Ryan is 28th in Division III with 97.4 receiving yards per game. David Blackburn is tied for 30th with 0.8 interceptions per contest. As a team the Tigers rank 11th in passing offense with 281.8 yards per game.

 

DEPAUW NOTES
Joe Schoen ranks eighth in school history with 113 catches and is seventh with 1,489 career receiving yards ... Dan Ryan leads the SCAC in scoring with 8.4 points (42 in 5 games) per game ... Schoen and Ryan rank first and second, respectively, in the SCAC in receiving yards and receptions per game ... David Blackburn leads the conference with 0.75 interceptions per game and Jason Lee is second in passing yards (249.6), total offense (233.2) and passing efficiency (109.7) ... Schoen is second in the SCAC in all-purpose yards with 104.2 per contest.

DEPAUW'S WEEK-FIVE MVPs
The Tigers' coaching staff selected three players as MVPs of the Sewanee game. Dan Ryan was selected on offense after catching eight passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Jason Geringer was the defensive choice with 11 tackles (according to film evaluation) and an interception. Shawn Odle earned special teams honors.
