Game-Ending Field Goal Lifts Hanover to 24-21 Win over DePauw

Senior defensive end Brian Close recorded three tackles for loss including two sacks.

Greencastle, Ind. -- Hanover senior B.J. Black booted a 22-yard field goal as time ran out to give nationally-ranked Hanover College a 24-21 victory over DePauw University at Blackstock Stadium. The win lifted Hanover to 1-0 on the season, while the Tigers fell to 0-2.

Hanover regained possession from the Tigers with 38 seconds left after DePauw couldn't convert a fourth down play from the Hanover 39. After an incomplete pass, Panthers' senior signal caller Eric Bruns completed a nine-yard strike to Travis Morris and then a 47-yarder to John Agan to put the ball at the DePauw five with just four-tenths of a second left. From there, Black booted the game-winner.

The game-winning kick thwarted a DePauw comeback effort that saw the Tigers overcome a 21-7 deficit on a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown passes from the arm of sophomore backup Scott Shelbourne who entered the game in the third quarter. His first was to Joe Schoen for 79 yards with 12:22 left in the game and the second went to Dan Ryan with 4:25 remaining. Shelbourne finished with eight of 11 passing for 161 yards.

Hanover wasted little time in getting on the board, needing just two plays on their first possession of the game, as wingback Bill Wilcox connected Bruns for a 45-yard score just 2:22 into the game. Black then booted a 40-yard field goal with 7:52 left in the first to make it 9-0 before Morris ran in from 3 yards out early in the second to give the visitors a 15-0 lead.

Schoen's 10-yard pass from DePauw starter Jason Lee with 7:05 left in the first half cut the margin to 15-7, but the Panthers struck midway through the third as Bruns teamed with Wilcox for a 73-yard score.

Bruns finished with 367 passing yards and connected on 31 of 49 for the day. John Agan hauled in 10 catches for 132 yards, while Schoen had eight catches for DePauw for 177 yards and two scores. DePauw running back A.J. Smart rushed for 89 yards on 17 carries and Jackson Rust gained 67 on just eight tries.

Hanover totaled 449 yards of offense including 412 through the air. The Tigers gained 386 yards with 255 coming from the passing game.

"I was very proud of our young men to battle back late in the game," 20th-year DePauw head coach Nick Mourouzis said.

DePauw hosts Hope College on Saturday, September 16, while Hanover is at Thomas More next Saturday.
