SCOUTING ROSE-HULMAN
The Engineers should be fresh after taking last Saturday off. They're coming off of a 27-14 win at Case Western Reserve and have won two of their last three games.

 

Sophomore quarterback Jared Tharpe tied a Rose-Hulman record by completing 28 passes in the win at Case Western and his 307 yards marked the first 300-yard passing performance by an Engineer since 1993. Tharpe has completed just under 51 percent of his passes for over 1,000 yards. His top receiver is Jon Harris with 30 grabs for 337 yards. B.J. Dames leads the running attack with an average of just under 50 yards per game.

 

Defensively, senior cornerback Justin Blomenberg leads the way with 59 tackles, while Nat Hill has 56 along with 10 pass breakups. David Berty leads the team with 14 tackles for loss including six sacks.

 

LAST YEAR'S MEETING
The Tigers recorded their first shutout since the 1997 opener as they blanked Rose-Hulman 33-0 to finish SCAC play at 3-3 and extend their win streak to three. 

 

DePauw racked up a season-high 478 yards of offense and limited the Engineers to just 223 yards. Additionally, the Tigers scored on each of their first four possessions. A pair of 15-play drives lifted the Old Gold to a 13-0 lead early in the second and two more scores in the second quarter made it 27-0 at halftime.

 

Scott Thies rushed for 81 yards, while Kurt Hare completed 20 of 28 passes for 285 yards. Joe Schoen led the Tigers with 10 catches for 172 yards and a school-record tying three touchdowns. Eric Hyten led Rose-Hulman with 71 rushing yards and set the Division III record for career rushing yards by a quarterback. Broc Leslie totaled eight tackles, while four different Tigers had one interception apiece. Brian Hagelskamp led the Engineers with 12 tackles followed by Josh Hulett with 11.

 

LAST WEEK'S TIGER WIN
After opening the season with four losses by a total of 18 points, the
Tigers made it all the way back to .500 with their fourth straight win
as they defeated host Centre College, 30-23. Full story

DEPAUW'S WEEK-EIGHT MVPs
The offensive line was selected as most valuable offensive players for the Tigers' in the win at Centre. DePauw totaled 168 rushing and 174 passing yards in the victory. Brian Close got the nod on defense after finishing with five tackles including 3.5 sacks for 19 yards in losses.

Ben Murray and Jason Geringer earned special teams honors. Murray made three of four field goals and all three extra points. Geringer put two of his five punts inside the 20 and recovered an onside kick in the fourth quarter.

DEPAUW TEAM NOTES
DePauw has now won 21 of 23 games over the second half of the last five
seasons and all 12 following the midseason break of each of the last three seasons . The DePauw defense has limited its last three opponents to a combined 30 rushing yards in 78 attempts . The Tigers have scored on 23 of 28 possessions inside the opponents' 20 for 131 points, while opponents are 14 of 20 for 73 points. Last week DePauw scored on six of seven times in the red zone for 30 points (all season highs) ... DePauw leads the SCAC in passing yards per game with 266.8 and in fewest sacks surrendered with just 15.

 

DEPAUW INDIVIDUAL NOTES
Joe Schoen moved into fourth place on the DePauw all-time receptions list with 131 and also ranks seventh with 1,690 career receiving yards. His 58 catches this season is the fourth highest single season total in school history and his 729 receiving yards is the eighth most. Jay True holds the all-time record with 65 catches in 1978 . Jason Lee's 1,918 passing yards this year ranks fifth in school history for a season . Dan Ryan leads the team and the conference with 66 points and has tied the single-season touchdown reception record with 11 ... Ryan leads the SCAC in receiving yards per game with 112.7, while Schoen is second with 91.1 ... Ryan also leads the conference in all-purpose yardage with 112.7 each game ... Kicker Ben Murray is fifth in the SCAC in scoring with 5.2 points per game ... Murray's 42 points this season is the most by a Tiger kicker since Jason Gardner had 53 in 1996.

 

NATIONAL RANKINGS
Sophomore receiver Dan Ryan is ranked 11th in Division III with 112.7 receiving yards per game and senior Joe Schoen is 14th with 7.3 reception per contest. Ryan is 29th in scoring with 9.4 points per game. Placekicker Ben Murray is tied for 30th with .88 field goals per game. As a team the Tigers rank 22nd in Division III passing offense with 266.8 yards per outing and are 25th in rushing defense at 80.6 yards allowed per game.

UP NEXT
The Tigers travel to Crawfordsville next Saturday to face Wabash in the annual Monon Bell game at 1:08 p.m. Rose-Hulman closes the season with a home game against Centre.
