Joseph P. Allen IV '59
Inducted: 1994
Joe Allen competed on DePauw's first varsity wrestling team during his
senior year. At the 123-pound class he helped the Tigers to a 9-1 dual
match record, including wins in the final nine matches. He placed third at
the Little State Meet. Allen was a Rector Scholar and Phi Beta Kappa at
DePauw. Following graduation from DePauw he was a Fulbright Scholar at
Christian Albrechts Universitat in Germany and then earned an M.S. and
Ph.D. degrees in physics from Yale. He was selected by NASA as a
scientist-astronaut and later flew aboard the Columbia space shuttle in
1982 and Discovery in 1984. He served as the director of Arvin Industries
and chair of several space-related organizations. A publisher of two
books, Allen has written over 40 papers in the fields of physics, space
operations, space research and science education. He received an Alumni
Citation from DePauw in 1972 and was the Old Gold Goblet recipient in
1985. Allen was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree in 1983 from
DePauw. He has served on the Alumni Board and Board of Visitors at DePauw
and was a speaker at the University's Sesquicentennial celebration. Allen
was a 1987 Julian Lecturer and served on the 1987 Fund for DePauw Science
Steering Committee. He currently serves as president of Space Industries
International.
