EMIL J. BAVASI '38

Emil "Buzzie" Bavasi earned a bachelor's degree in political science and
three varsity letters as a catcher on the baseball team while at DePauw.
He went on to a 35-year career as one of Major League Baseball's pioneers.
Following graduation from DePauw, Bavasi joined the office staff of the
Brooklyn Dodgers. He rose through the ranks and eventually served as
executive vice president and general manager of the Brooklyn, and then Los
Angeles, Dodgers professional baseball team from 1951 to 1968. He was
president of the San Diego Padres from 1969 to 1977 and general manager of
the California Angels from 1978 to 1984. His teams won two division
titles, eight league championships and four World Series. He was named
Executive of the Year with Los Angeles in 1959 and with the minor league
Montreal franchise in 1948. He earned the Bronze Star during World War II.
