Walter R.
Foltz '62
Inducted: 1997
An Indianapolis native, Wally Foltz was a standout on the DePauw football
field almost immediately. He earned a starting slot on both offense and
defense as a sophomore. That year he was both the team's leading pass
receiver and tackler. During his junior season he led the team in pass
receptions on the team and was one of the leading pass receivers in the
Midwest, catching 17 passes for 348 yards and two touchdowns. Foltz led
his team in tackles and minutes played and was selected all-conference and
Little All-American, in spite of contracting mononucleosis, which
shortened his season. He played varsity basketball and was an occasional
starter his sophomore, junior and senior years. His senior year, however,
was the capping of an exceptional four-year football career. He was
selected to the all-conference team, Little All-American team, the
Together Magazine Methodist All-American team and was elected co-captain
by his teammates. He was invited to play in the All-American Bowl in
Tucson and was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers of the NFL, the Dallas
Texans of the AFL, and was drafted by the Montreal Alouettes of the
Canadian Football League. He accepted the 49ers offer but instead joined
the Air Force, where he served for six years. He has been rated in the top
10 in Indiana men's tennis, earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, was a
participant in the Pan Am Games in Indianapolis and has been coach and
youth director for soccer, baseball, football and basketball in
Indianapolis. A small business owner for 23 years, he is currently vice
president of Sports Recycled, Inc. and area manager for the United States
Chamber of Commerce. He is married to Michelle and the father of two
children. The Foltzs live in Indianapolis.
