ROBERT W. FRIBLEY '35

Inducted: 1986

They said his "size (215 pounds) and his speed allowed him to run over would be tacklers." It apparently was true, for Fribley was the leading scorer in all of Indiana college football in 1934. The rangy halfback from Logansport and Fort Wayne was the only player from a secondary (small college) Hoosier school to make the Indianapolis Star's all-state team in '34. William fox, revered sports editor of the Indianapolis News, wrote that Fribley had reached a stage of "super-elegance" in sports. Part of his credentials, which also included a starting role on the famed '33 team, he owed to his prowess in track. Fribley set DePauw's 440-yard dash mark at :48.8 in the Big State meet in 1935-and it still stands. He was also on the Tigers' mile relay team that set a Little State mark of 3:24.9. Fribley was a Rector Scholar, president of the senior class and winner of the Walker Cup. He entered the ministry of Broadway United Methodist Church in Indianapolis. He is now a "professional volunteer" in his church and community in Indianapolis. He served DePauw as a trustee and as president of its national alumni association.
