G. Richard Hershberger '57
Inducted: 1994
Dick Hershberger came to DePauw in 1953 with no cross country experience,
but decided to run to stay in shape for track season. Four years later he
graduated as a three-year letterman in the sport and a co-captain his
senior year. He earned four letters in track and as a sophomore, finished
first in five of the seven meets and captured the Indiana Collegiate
Conference and Little State championships in the two-mile run. Three times
during the 1955 season he defeated a runner from Ball State who had never
been beaten before. He took the two-mile championship at the conference
meet his junior and senior seasons and set the ICC record in 1956 in the
event. As a senior he also captured the conference championship in the
one-mile run. The Tigers won both team titles.He graduated in 1961 from
Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and spent a year interning at
Saginaw (Mich.) Osteopathic Hospital. In 1962 he began a family physician
practice in Walkerton, Ind., his hometown. He has maintained the practice
for over 30 years. Hershberger also has staff membership at Michiana
Community Hospital and St. Joseph's Medical Center in South Bend. A member
of several professional organizations, Hershberger is also involved in
several civic organizations.
