Alan P. Hill '81
Inducted: 1994
DePauw's first national champion, Alan Hill captured the NCAA Division III
pole vault title by leaping 15 feet, four inches. He still holds the
school record fo 16 feet, one inch. Hill was a three-time all-American in
track in addition to being a standout on the football field. In a game at
St. Norbert's College, Hill intercepted a school-record four passes for
159 yards which is also a record. For those efforts he earned a spot in
Sports Illustrated's "Faces in the Crowd" section. At the time of
induction, his records for interception return yardage for a season and
career as well as career kickoff returns still stand. He also was the last
DePauw player to return a kickoff for a touchdown and accomplished the
feat in consecutive games during the 1980 season. Against Olivet Nazarene
he returned a kickoff a school-record 100 yards. His average of 36.2 yards
per return is among the 15 highest single-season averages on all levels.
Hill earned a B.A. in 1981 and an M.A.T. in 1983 and then worked as a
marketing representative for IBM in Indianapolis. He came back to DePauw
in 1987 as an assistant director of admissions and later served as
director of new student financial services prior to being named the
director of financial aid. Hill then was promoted to assistant to the
provost in 1993.
