CLOYD J. JULIAN '33
Inducted: 1987
At the time he graduated, Cloyd Julian was described as DePauw's "greatest
distance runner to date." It was an apt description, for he ran the half
mile, the mile and the two mile, scoring 153 points in three seasons. He
won the two mile in the Little State three years running. His best times
were 1:59 in the half mile, 4:20 in the mile and 9:32 in the two mile. He
was also the mainstay of the cross country team. After DePauw Julian
coached basketball, track and baseball at Austin (IN) High School. In 1937
he joined the athletic staff at George Washington High School in
Indianapolis, spending 40 years there, with three out to serve in the U.S.
Navy Air Corps. After winning a variety of championships at Washington,
Julian became a consultant to the Indianapolis Public Schools, then
returned to GWHS as vice principal, later becoming principal form 1960-77,
when he retired. For his many personal and professional successes, he was
elected to the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 1974. He has authored high
school health education textbooks, and in 1978 was recognized by the
educational fraternity Phi Delta Kappa "for service to universal
education." He presently serves on the boards of Central Indiana Council
on Aging, Central Indiana Planned Parenthood Association and is chairman
of the scholarship committee of the Indianapolis Rotary Club.
