RICHARD L. MACE '60
Inducted: 1991
Dick Mace played football and ran track at DePauw. Mace's name still
appears in the DePauw record book with a 70-yard punt. The speedster was
considered one of the best breakaway runners in the state and displayed
his versatility in the 1959 Old Gold game against Valparaiso when he
rushed for a touchdown, passed for another as well as a two-point
conversion, intercepted a pass and forced a safety with his record-setting
punt. He averaged nearly 52 yards in his four punts. As a senior, Mace was
the second leading vote-getter for all-conference honors. A sprinter on
the track team, Mace set two conference records and another school mark.
As a senior he was named DePauw Student Senate Athlete of the Year. After
receiving a master's degree from Indiana University, he served as head
football, track and wrestling coach at Seymour High School. His football
team compiled a record of 32-20-3, and he was named conference Coach of
the Year in 1965. His track teams never had a losing season while setting
eight school records and winning sectional and regional championships. He
then spent 19 years with Fidelity Union Life Insurance Company, advancing
to the position of assistant regional vice president.
