J. BRUCE MACKEY '65
Inducted: 1993
Bruce Mackey earned three varsity letters each in baseball and football
while at DePauw. As a senior he was named DePauw's Most Outstanding
Athlete of the Year. He earned first team all-Indiana Collegiate
Conference honors three times as a pitcher and was the runner-up for the
Most Valuable Player Award as a junior. He was DePauw's baseball MVP his
junior and senior seasons. In football, he quarterbacked the team to a
pair of wins over Wabash and led the Tigers in passing, total offense and
scoring his junior and senior years. He was also the leading punter for
three seasons. Upon graduation he attended graduate school and served as
an assistant football coach at DePauw before being drafted into the Army.
Mackey served as a platoon leader of an infantry medical platoon in
Vietnam and received a Combat Medical Badge and Bronze Star for
Meritorious Service in ground operation against hostile forces. After
leaving the Army with the rank of captain, Mackey worked in the investment
field for a year prior to working for Envelopes Unlimited, a company he
became the president of just one year later in 1972. In 1976 he became the
chairman of the board for the company that, in 1993, has 300 employees and
$27,000,000 in annual sales and is among the 200 largest printers in the
country. His business was honored in 1992 and 1993 as one of the best
managed companies in North America by the National Association of Printers
and Lithographers. Mackey is involved in community service and has served
on three other boards.
