THOMAS A. MONT (Coach)
Inducted: 1992
A teacher, coach and director of athletics at DePauw, Tom Mont came to the
school in 1959 as head football coach and retired in 1987 as chair of the
health, physical education and recreation department and director of
athletics. His 18-year stint as head football coach remains the longest in
school history but more impressive was his 12-5-1 record against Wabash.
Mont's 67 wins rank third in school history. In his time as director of
athletics he was instrumental in the University's move out of the Indiana
Collegiate Conference, which was a big school league, and into the Indiana
Collegiate Athletic Conference. Following an outstanding athletic career
in football, basketball and lacrosse at the University of Maryland, Mont
played three seasons of professional football with the Washington Redskins
as quarterback and defensive halfback. He spent the 1950 season as
backfield coach of the Redskins, then returned to Maryland as backfield
assistant in 1951. Five years later he became head coach of the Terrapins.
In 1958, he coached in the annual Blue-Gray game in Montgomery, Ala. He
also participated in two Orange Bowl games and one Sugar Bowl. Mont has
previously been inducted into the University of Maryland and state of
Maryland Athletic Halls of Fame as well as the Indiana Football Hall of
Fame. In 1983, DePauw alumni named Mont "Alumni Faculty Fellow" in
recognition of his promotional work with the alumni nationwide.
